A quick word on AZ's Exec

A lot has gone on, in a relatively short period of time. We've chosen to split the Vice President position into two separate offices, Vice Presidents of Membership and Programs. Additionally, the office of Service Coordinator has been removed; these duties were absorbed by the VPP. This was done in order to bring our Executive Structure more in line with the NCD and National structures; additionally, we wanted to recognize the amount of work that goes into coordinating and planning service events.

The VPP is also charged with increasing and maintaining the musicality of the chapter. This includes events like the Kappa Kappa Re-Psi-tal; it also includes something new, a "Musical Moment" during each meeting, where a brother shares a band piece that holds a special significance to them.

Profiles on the new Exec will be coming later this week!

On Monday, March 28, 2011, Alpha Zeta welcomed 15 new initiates into the brotherhood at Hundred Hall! We were happy to have Mr. Stephen Pratt, Dr. Matthew Smith, Mr. Will Petersen, and our sponsor Mr. David Woodley join us for the ritual. We were also joined by several brothers from Gamma Pi at Purdue and NCD Governor Rod Whiteman. More to come on our new initiates soon.

Alpha Zeta loved meeting our alums this past weekend to sing the hymn before the tailgate.

Andrew Bradley introduced his (real) family to us: "Meet my father, he's my brother. Meet my sister, she's my brother." Schuyler Troy also got to meet his (Psi) grandchildren. It was great seeing so many generations of KKPsi families together.

Hoping for Hawaii 5-0

Among the throngs of fall premieres these last two months, CBS’s remake of Hawaii Five-O stands out among the rest for the brothers of AZ. In promotion of this premiere, CBS hosted a nation-wide video competition open to all collegiate marching bands to perform the iconic Hawaii Five-O theme song; the kicker being that the winning marching band received a $25,000 award. The Indiana University Marching Hundred submitted a video to the competition starring AZ’s very own Hawaiian native, Dylan Suehiro. Our video started with the Marching Hundred performing the song in full marching uniform; however, midway through we spontaneously change into more appropriate Hawaiian and beach garb. While we were all a little disappointed when the Mighty Sound of Maryland Marching Band was announced as the winning band, we certainly grew as an ensemble and brotherhood through this competition. In the end though we didn’t win, how many other people can say they’ve played their marching instruments in nothing but beachwear. It was a great experience even if it did show off the harsh tan lines accumulated at band camp.

We're all nerds at heart

On the sunny afternoon of Friday, September 10^th, sweater vests and argyle were in style at Kappa Kappa Psi’s Nerd Party. Biz rocked an IU snuggie and dutch clogs while Dylan wore suspenders and taped glasses. Attendance was great! There were nearly as many PPMs as brothers in attendance. There were games such as root beer pong, Apples to Apples, and Bananagrams and a lot of just “getting to know” the PPMs. Everyone brought their inner nerd from the inside to the outside and had a great time.

Alpha Zeta started this year with a lineup of incredibly fun recruitment activities. One of my favorites was the scavenger hunt. Armed with a sheet of cleverly phrased clues, groups consisting of brothers and PPMs ran (literally) all over campus. Some of the notable stops along the way were the President's House, the Sample Gates, and a stop to shake the statuesque hand of Herman B. Wells. Upon returning to Read at the end of the hour, my group realized what one last clue meant. Lily Library. With about seven minutes remaining, we sprinted there, took a quick photograph, and then sprinted (and by sprinted I mean walked as fast as we could) back. We were the last group to return and another group won, but it was definitely one fabulous recruitment event, and I didn't have to go on a run that night!

What's your secret?

On September 18th, the brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi traveled to the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square to view the Post Secret Exhibit. With the topic being Confessions on Life, Death, and God, the brothers silently reflected on the postcards, attempting to empathize with the secret holders. This event was a great experience for the brothers to step out of the comfort zone of the IU campus and get to know one another while discussing the deep secrets of the exhibit. In addition to visiting the Art Center, several brothers had the opportunity to attend a local community arts festival. Belly dancing, artists, merchants, and craft-makers all had booths set up. The entire trip was an eye opening experience that brought the brothers closer together.

Alpha Zeta Attends Summer FUNction!

This past summer, six brothers travelled from around the Midwest to attend the Kappa Kappa Psi North Central District’s Summer FUNction. The Summer FUNction is an opportunity for brothers from around the district to gather and simply have fun! This year, Summer FUNction took place in Southern Indiana, just 45 minutes south of Bloomington, at Spring Mill State Park.

Some of the activities enjoyed were swimming, a game of volleyball with the Zeta Epsilon chapter from Michigan State, cooking hot dogs over an open fire, and enjoying s’mores into the night with brothers and sisters.

Lots of brotherly love at the Luau!

As a recruitment even Alpha Zeta put on a Luau at the home of Courtney Grayson and Sarah Wever. The luau had an EXCELLENT turn out with a lot of really great pre-prospective members. You could really feel the excitement and enthusiasm in the air that the PPMs had about joining Psi. As part of the luau there were many festive decorations, plenty of leis, and a lovely aquarium scene in the background courtesy of the FInding Nemo DVD special features. There were also plenty of delicious food options including Hawaiian chocolate fondue and an awesome bikini top cake made by Caitlyn Kruer in honor of Ryan Rottman's 23rd birthday! Overall only positive things have been said about the luau and it was an excellent start to our recruitment process!

Meet the Fall 2010 Executive Council

Ryan Comerford, ΔΨ

Ryan is from Glen Ellyn, IL just 25 miles due west of Chicago, and is majoring in Information Process Management and Supply Chain Management within the Kelley School of Business. Ryan is the lead teaching assistant for the “Technology in Business” course and participates in many case competitions throughout the year. Outside of Kelley, Ryan plays baritone for the Marching Hundred, Crabb Band, Big Red Basketball Band and All Campus Band. When deciding on joining Psi, Ryan evaluated how he wished to dedicate his time while at IU, and realized that music is a strong passion, and wanted to give back through this fraternity. As President, he hopes to instill best practices learned from previous leadership positions in order to add value to Alpha Zeta. Ryan is really looking forward to this semester!

Dylan Suehiro, EA

Dylan was born and raised on the Big Island of Hawai'i and is studying music education with a minor in wind conducting. A trombonist by trade, he has served as the vice president of AZ since fall 2009. Away from music, Dylan enjoys running and inventing recipes. He is also a copy editor for the Indiana Daily Student. A member of the EA PM class of 2009, Dylan joined KKPsi because it offered a welcome continuation of the many opportunities he had in his high school's band program. This semester, he is most looking forward to being the Guiding Spirit for Epsilon Gamma.

Jessica Zmierski, EA

Jessica from Chesterton, Indiana and is majoring in Chemistry with a minor in History. Jessica holds the office of Secretary. Her instrument is clarinet, although she started her musical interest on the violin, which she still plays to this day. While not in a music ensemble Jessica enjoys sewing quilts, watching the Chicago Cubs & Indianapolis Colts, and hiking through Mammoth Caves. She joined Psi because music has influenced so much of her life, and she wanted to give back to the bands that have created so many cherished memories. Jessica remarked that she is “looking forward to having a hand in creating the Offbeat, and creating stronger bonds within the chapter.”

Paul Reinhart, EB

Paul is a sophomore from Brownsburg, IN. His primary major is Speech and Hearing Sciences with a secondary major Classical Civilizaiton with a literary and cultural emphasis. His primary instrument is French Horn; however, he also plays clarinet and baritone. Paul is proudly serving as Treasurer. He enjoys music (obviously), hiking, traveling, and reading. Paul joined Psi last year in order to maintain a high level of musical involvement despite being a non-music major. Paul's goal for this semester is to grow as both an N.I. and member of the executive team.

Caitlyn Kruer, ΔΨ

Caitlyn Kruer is from the great city of Louisville, Kentucky and is majoring in Exercise Science. She just finished applying to physical therapy school and has been checking the mail every single day since. Her primary instrument is piccolo and she chose to join Psi because she loved the band family she had in high school and wanted to continue serving the bands. Joining Psi has been a great decision for Caitlyn--she made wonderful friends and has had some great experiences--and she has done her best to do her part for the organization by fundraising and holding the position of Sergeant at Arms. Outside of Psi, Caitlyn mostly studies like a mad woman, but she also enjoys the occasional run, is learning to feed herself without a microwave and loves to make jewelry.

Biz Carson is from Alpharetta, Georgia and is majoring in Journalism, International Studies and Spanish with a minor in Western European Studies. Trombone is her primary instrument in the Marching Hundred and All Campus Band. In Psi, Biz holds the position of Alumni Secretary and Convention Planning Committee. She's always looking for new ways to involve alumni in Alpha Zeta. Biz joined Psi because music has always been such a big part of her life and she loved spending time with the brothers during recruitment events. When not doing Psi-related things, Biz can be found working for the Indiana Daily Student newspaper and Inside Magazine, procrastinating, quoting Zoolander and collecting old Coca-Cola ads.

Courtney Grayson, ΔΨ

Courtney Grayson is from Fishers, Indiana and is pursuing a graphic design major with a minor in business marketing. Mellophone is her primary instrument in the Marching Hundred and other athletic ensembles on campus. Within Psi, Courtney holds the Member at Large position and enjoys planning brotherhood functions for the chapter as well as creating fun recruitment events. Specifically, she would like to see the chapter grow and develop stronger brotherhood bonds through continued use of the revised recruitment schedule. Her involvement in Psi was spurred by her "dad" in the chapter as well as a love for serving the bands of IU. While not helping out with Psi, Courtney enjoys designing posters, playing around in Photoshop, chilling with friends, and playing cool diddies on the piano.

Loren Clark, EA

Loren is from West Lafayette, IN and is majoring in Anthropology, Classical Civilizations and Literature, and pursuing a certificate in Underwater Resource Management. She plays Alto Saxophone in the Marching Hundred although her primary instrument is Clarinet. Outside of Psi and band, Loren is involved in the Calamity Jane Ultimate Frisbee Club, IU Taekwondo, and loves to read and gaze endlessly at the stars. She joined Psi as a way to get involved in helping and supporting programs of music since music has always had a presence in her life. She fell in love with the brothers and the initiative in Alpha Zeta. As Service coordinator, Loren hopes to communicate as well as possible with the band department and the Marching Hundred so that AZ can serve the departments to the best of its ability.

Danny Corbin

Danny is from Bloomington, IN and is majoring in Criminal Justice. Danny plays trombone in the Marching Hundred and the Big Red Basketball Band. When asked "Why Psi?" Danny commented "I joined Psi because I wanted to give back to the bands that have given me so much throughout college" Danny is most excited about psi because "I can meet all sorts of different people and hang out with a great group of people."

Paul Reinhart

Paul is from Brownsburg, IN and is majoring in Speech and Hearing Sciences and classical civilization. Outside of Psi Paul throws a mean pizza and studies. He joined Psi to "maintain a high level engagement with the bands even as a nonmusic major." What makes Paul the most excited about Psi is "the camaraderie that can only be achieved through making music together and working towards a common goal."

Holly Sheffer

Holly is from Crown Point, Indiana, USA, Earth, Milky Way and is majoring in Secondary English Education. Her primary instrument is Tenor Sax. Outside of Psi Holly enjoys reading, studying, practicing spells, and Quiddich. When asked "Why Psi?" Holly commented "my 'sister' is a member of Gamma Pi and I've ehard about it for years. Then I came here and fell in love with the organization and the people." What makes Holly the most excited about Psi is "Helping the band programs and participating in brotherhood activities."

Brittany Tempest

Brittany is from North Vernon, IN and is majoring in Music Journalism. She plays piccolo in Marching Hundred and the Big Red Basketball Band. Brittany decided to join Psi because "I really liked the brotherhood and I like to help out the bands wherever I can." When asked what she was most excited about in Psi she commented "Stadium Clean-ups! (kidding) I'm just excited to help out."

Mike Villano

Mike grew up in Louisville, CO and currently lives in Granger, IN and is majoring in Music Education. His primary instrument is trombone. Outside of Psi Mike enjoys flying kites (not the kind from the dollar store!). Mike decided to join Psi because "Music/band has given me the world, so I want to do my part to pay it back." Mike is most excited about Psi because "Music/band has given me the world, so I want to do my part to pay it back."

At IU Sarah participated in the All Campus Band, the Marching Hundred, and the Big Red Basketball Band with her main instrument being the flute and piccolo. Outside of Kappa Kappa Psi Sarah is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Inside of Psi Sarah's favorite memory was seeing her son become a brother and helping her along throughout the prospective member process. To future brothers of Psi Sarah advises to "Travel the District & Nation. You never know who you will meet!"

Jessi Reddick, ΔΦ

Jessi is from Glen Ellyn, IL. She graduated from IU with a major in history and minors in Near Eastern Languages and cultures and music. At IU Jessi participated in the All Campus Band, the Marching Hundred, and the Big Red Basketball Band with her main instruments being the Tenor sax and clarinet. Outside of Kappa Kappa Psi Jessi enjoys rock climbing and teaching boy scouts how to rock climb. Inside of Psi Jessi's favorite memories were the brotherhood pow wow she lead when she was historian her sophomore year that made everyone cry and hug each other and her semester with Epsilon Alpha and their initiation ("Epsilon Alpha Asseemmmbbllee!"). To future brothers of Psi Sarah advises to "Make sure that you enjoy time together both in and out of the fraternity. Take the time to get to know the people you may not know or that have different political/religious/etc beliefs than you. You may not have anything else besides band in common with 90% of the chapter, and you should spend time with that 90% to grow as a person."

Ryan is from Sylvania, IN. He graduated from IU with a major in biology. At IU Ryan participated in the All Campus Band and the Marching Hundred with his main instrument being the trombone. Outside of Kappa Kappa Psi Ryan is on the RHA J-board and the pre-optometry club. Inside of Psi Ryan's favorite memory was the Kappa Kappa rePSItal. Hope is from Baltimore, MD. She graduated from IU with a major in Telecommunications and television production. At IU Hope participated in the the Marching Hundred with her main instruments being the trumpet and baritone. Outside of Kappa Kappa Psi Hope is the videographer for the IU Women's Basketball team. Fundraising: A Zombie Apocalypse

Rule number one? Cardio. I have found that when you fundraise, much of your life is spent chasing people, not for their brains, but for their cash. (See Zombieland) I have served almost two years in the office of Sergeant at Arms, and it has proved to be one of the most frustrating and rewarding leadership positions I have ever held.

Money is, unfortunately, extremely necessary to run this organization, and when I came into the office our bank account wasn’t in the happiest place and there was no record of past activity. It has improved, but it could certainly be better. Through participating in stadium cleanups, selling sweatshirts, CDs, DVDs, hats, garment bags and holding fundraisers at restaurants, I’ve exhausted my ideas. That’s why now I’m looking to the past and asking you: What fundraising did the chapter benefit from when you were an active brother? How did you better advertise fundraisers to maximize the profits?

As you know, we do this for a purpose. Music and band have been so influential, certainly in my life, and I want to do my part to give back along with my brothers! My part might be chasing people down, begging for opportunities at every corner, and living around the many boxes that fill my dorm room, but in the end it’s worth it. Everything is for the bands and everything is for giving those the experiences we have already been so lucky to have.

New Initiate Leaders

As Alpha Zeta finished its first year long Prospective Member process, new initiates to the brotherhood stepped up in various roles. From the office of Alumni Secretary to the office of Vice President, Epsilon Alpha has surely made its impact upon AZ.
In order to find more qualified members for recruitment, AZ decided to switch to a year long process, instead of two p.m. classes per academic year. As EA became adjusted to what and how AZ operated for the department of bands as a whole, two members particularly showed their desire to strive for the highest.
Sarah Wever and Dylan Suehiro stepped up and took on positions even though they didn’t necessarily have the knowledge initially to do so. In particular, Suehiro the office of V.P. and being the guiding spirit for Epsilon Beta. For an office that is reserved for elder members, a new initiate, took his first hand experiences, previous lesson plans, and guidance of fellow brothers to provide a unique experience to those seeking admittance. Suehiro took former V.P, Jessi Reddick’s guidance and taught the five new prospective members of EB the history of Kappa Kappa Psi, the importance of brotherhood, traditions of AZ, and how the lessons learned by being a brother of Psi can have a positive impact on oneself and be used in everyday occurrences.
By being an n.i. himself, Suehiro could offer the understanding of being a p.m. in a year long process, and having to deal with a process that still doesn’t have all the nuts and bolts worked out quite yet. For the time being, the p.m. process became a learning process for all those involved, and will continue to have to be tweaked to allow the chapter to strengthen.
Another n.i. that stepped up to an executive position within AZ was Sarah Wever. As Alumni Secretary, Wever took over the task of co-chairing the communications committee, and running the Alpha Zetan.
“It's been a lot of fun seeing the ‘behind the scenes’ to everything that was going on last year before we were initiated. I also feel like it's given me a good way to contribute especially during the spring since I'm not in ACB,” Wever said. Since Marching Hundred is associated with the fall semester, it becomes difficult to be involved with AZ during the spring. Being on the executive council gives brothers the opportunity to be involved specifically in at least one aspect (communications/brotherhood/fundraising/membership ed. etc...) of the fraternity.
As the year long process continues to develop and more brothers take the journey, n.i.’s will have the opportunity to form closer and more comfortable relationships within the chapter, and contribute their ideas and strong qualities to a diverse organization. Although n.i.’s don’t necessarily understand quite how the inner workings of AZ operate when they are sworn in, that doesn’t mean that they are any less qualified to offer suggestions and/or be a leader.

District Convention – Spring 2010

District convention was hosted by the Nu chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Lambda chapter of Tau Beta Sigma in Dearborn, Michigan. Seven brothers from Alpha Zeta attended the convention. Two of the brothers, Dylan Suehiro and Sarah Wever, played in the North Central District Intercollegiate Band. Brother Sarah Emery served as the delegate for Alpha Zeta, and as the Nominations Committee Chair for the district. Brothers Loren Clark, Daniel Corbin, Holly Sheffer and Brittany Tempest also attended the convention.

Alpha Zeta presented a bid to host the 2011 convention on Indiana University’s campus, but lost it to a bid presented by the Gamma Pi (Purdue) and Mu Delta (Western Michigan University) chapters of Kappa Kappa Psi and the Beta Sigma (Purdue) chapter of Tau Beta Sigma. Alpha Zeta is currently planning to rework and resubmit the bid next year for the 2012 convention.

The North Central District Intercollegiate Band was a huge success this year. Suehiro participated as the principal trombone for the ensemble, and Wever played the flute. They both have strongly recommended participating in the ensemble to brothers in the future.

Clark, Corbin, Sheffer and Tempest were able to attend some of the small group sessions. One session attended by Sheffer and Tempest discussed creative ways to serve the bands. One idea that they came up with was creating a jazz ensemble for non-music majors.

All of the brothers who attended this year’s North Central District Convention returned from it inspired to serve the bands better and to get to know more brothers from around the district. Since the district convention, our chapter has also made visits to Gamma Pi for third degree and the Theta Epsilon for the Great Southern Hospitality Cookout.

Convention Bid: A Love Note

While getting handed the four bound editions of our convention bid to send in the mail, I felt several things all at once. The first was the desire to cough because I had bronchitis. The second was to pass out because I had pulled an all-nighter working on the budget. The third was a strong sense of pride and accomplishment in Alpha Zeta.

The initial work on the convention bid occurred before I even knew what KKPsi was. Cassey Crowell and her convention committee had worked to submit a bid the year before. Lacking the full support of the chapter, it never went beyond the initial planning stages

A year later, I held bound copies of 69 pages of plans, budgets, maps, restaurants, etc. Looking back on the experience of producing a convention bid, it was more than just compiling a list of restaurants and budgeting how much money would be spent on bagels for breakfast. The most rewarding part was looking and evaluating our own chapter.

We do a lot of service in Alpha Zeta – stand tightening, water bottle, uniforms, cleaning Hundred Hall, music filing, etc. It all blurs together in the time of a year, as service just becomes part of what you do. To prepare for the bid, we had to list everything and put it in a positive light. It was great to see how much we do, but also where we need to improve. We could easily identify our strengths and weaknesses. The bid became a self-evaluation, a presentation of our chapter, and a chance to reflect on our work.

The same evaluation happened with every aspect of our chapter: joint relations, sponsor relations, membership education, and finances. It was nice to take a step back and look at the chapter from an outside perspective. What would people think of our chapter as they flipped through our bid? Would they think we’re on the decline because of our low PM classes? Would they think we’re financially unstable since our budget isn’t in the tens of thousands?

Regardless of their answers, I’m proud of our bid. The feedback from the committee and our brothers was really good and beneficial. We’ll continue to rework the bid and submit it for convention 2012. Watch out North Central District.

Juliana Musmanno ΔΤ joined AZ her first semester here at IU. Since then, she has had the pleasure of being elected to three offices on exec and serving two of them. In spring 2009 she received the award of Outstanding Brother from the chapter. Originally a music education major (euphonium), Juliana had the honor to work as a band librarian. She marched four seasons as a sousaphone with the Hundred. Her best memories from Psi and band include the adventures of the Sousy Gnome and getting to know and work with so many diverse personalities. She graduated on December 19 with a B.A in journalism and a minor in academic music. Post graduation she moved back to her hometown of Pittsburgh to look for employment and see where life takes her next. AEA.

Drew Rhoda ΔΥ became a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi in the fall of 2006 in the Delta Psi class under the guiding leadership of Andrea Kopp and Father Juliana Musmanno. Drew was lucky enough to become bass drum section leader for the Marching Hundred, bass drummer for the Crabb Band, played drum set in the Big Red Basketball Band and was a section member of the Indiana University Wind Ensemble. A music education major, Drew is currently student teaching at Paoli High School with Bill Laughlin and will graduate in the Summer of 2010 with a Bachelors of Music Education from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. In addition to being a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi Drew is also a member of the Percussive Arts Society and MENC: the National Association for Music Education.

Annelise Herchen ΔΧ is a 2006 graduate of Duxbury High School from Massachusetts. She is currently a senior at Indiana University studying music education. In high school, she was active in the Honors Society, president of both the Wind and String Ensemble, an AP Scholar and private flute teacher. An avid participant in the music program at DHS, she now studies music education and plans on becoming a music teacher. She plays the piccolo, flute, tenor saxophone, and cello. She has had the privilege of being one of two librarians for the band department at IU - working with and learning from world renown professors.

At IU she was a member of the piccolo section of the Marching Hundred for three years, an Undergraduate Staff member for three years and a drum major for one. She has been the principle flutist for both the Concert and Symphonic Bands and received numerous awards in both the marching and concert bands. She joined Psi in the spring semester of her freshman year and remained active until graduating at the end of the fall semester of 2009.

Ferguson memorial expands in third year

AZ awarded the Jeremy Ferguson Memorial Scholarship to trombonist Debbie Newman at 2009’s Marching Hundred banquet on December 7. She was the third recipient of this award and the first non-brother.

Ferguson was tragically killed in a car accident in fall of 2007. In more recent years he was known as the “Golden Voice of the Marching Hundred,” but during his time as a student he was a baritone in the Hundred and a brother of AZ.

After hearing about his death and realizing there were sufficient funds, active brothers under then president, Schuyler Troy, decided to make a scholarship in his honor. It was decided that applicants for the award must have completed at least three years in the hundred and be returning the next season. This was to ensure dedication to the band. They also must have no less than a 3.0 GPA. To apply, they submit an essay to the chapter about how music and band have changed their lives for the better.

Because the first two recipients were brothers (Jamal Miller ’07 and Cassey Crowell ’09) the chapter updated the bylaw to encourage other members of the Hundred to apply.

“If less than five letters have been submitted one week prior to the deadline,” states the bylaw,” active brothers are encouraged to apply.”

Each year the number of submissions has grown. This year, four non-brothers applied.

There is no way to know where the chapter will be financially, so the bylaw does not state how much monetary value the scholarship holds. This time, Newman will be awarded $250 upon returning to band next fall.

Memories fade; Traditions live on

Many honored traditions have been created in the Marching Hundred. The clarinet section has had the honor of two awards, the red and white Vito, given every game day, in memory of two people dear to the hearts of those who knew them. Although these awards are similar in style and meaning, they each have their own unique story to tell.

The Marching Hundred clarinet section marched all white Vitos, a model of clarinet produced by LeBlanc corp.; this set Indiana apart from the Big Ten marching bands. But because of the plastic clarinets demand for countless hours of repairs, the white clarinets were discontinued from being used before the 1997 marching season. In 1998, the clarinet section brought back a single white Vito to be awarded to the most spirited member of the clarinets that week before a home football game. In 1999 the recently inaugurated spirit award was dedicated in memory of Tiffany Nicole Powell, who was a beloved member of the clarinets.

In 1999 Powell, a newly initiated brother of AZ, was tragically killed in a car accident. An excellent student, Powell achieved a 4.00 gpa her first year at Indiana University, the brothers set up an award to be given to a current first or second year brother who exuded the same dedication to music and their education studies. The executive council of AZ presents the Tiffany Nicole Powell award in memory of an honored brother to a worthy recipient at the spring banquet. The council can elect not to give the award if they feel that a brother does not meet the qualifications.

In 2005 The LeBlanc corp. gave a new white and red Vito to the Marching Hundred. The red Vito was and still is awarded to a member of the clarinet section based upon the best attitude during the week prior to game day. This clarinet is awarded in memory of Steve Jones who passed away from cancer in 2005. Jones daughter, Molly, still keeps in touch with the Marching Hundred clarinet section. Although Jones is no longer with us, he is remembered for starting the clarinet tailgate and being a supportive fan of the Hoosiers.

These two uniquely crafted instruments have been awarded in memory of past contributors of the Marching Hundred, but very few people outside the clarinet section know why these colored instruments are still used. It is a tradition, which is bestowed upon the veterans of the section, past and present, to keep these traditions alive. As memories fade of seasons past, the memory that a member of the Marching Hundred has of being a part of “A Tradition of Excellence” is priceless and should always be treasured. It has been an honor of the clarinet section to march with these specific instruments in memory of deserving veterans, and will always be in the memory of those who have been given the opportunity to keep the tradition alive.

Brothers adjust fundraisers in face of recession

A group of red-eyed, bleary members of AZ and Rho huddled around a box of donuts and jugs of orange juice. It was 7 a.m. on Sunday morning when they clasped gloved hands clumsily around Styrofoam cups. It was okay if a little orange juice sloshed onto the rough beige fabric. After all, they would be dealing with much worse later. At that moment in time, it was about sugar and brotherhood. They would

need this later as they combed the grounds of Memorial Stadium picking up trash.

Under the stress of the economic recession, many IU student groups have to rework and expand their fundraising strategy. This includes Kappa Kappa Psi’s AZ chapter.

Twice this semester, the group has gathered early in the morning to clean up the tailgates trash. The piles of beer cans, hamburgers, pizza boxes, and the occasional diaper or pair of boxers equate to $1200 for the chapter. This $1200 means some sort of financial stability – the chapter can survive another year.

Traditionally, the chapter has been funded through dues and fundraisers that have been traditions since its inception. Now, Treasurer

Ryan Comerford and Sergeant-At-Arms Caitlyn Kruer (both of Delta Psi) are having to think on their feet to create new ways to keep AZ afloat in the rough economic waters.

“I haven’t seen a drop in fundraising so far this year, but I have made sure I offer things that can’t be purchased elsewhere: the Hundred car stickers and BRBB sweatshirts," Kruer says, "or activities that people may have attended other

wise: fundraiser at AppleBee’s."

Comerford and Kruer have continued to reinvent the fundraising style of the chapter. At the beginning of the semester, AppleBees sponsored a night where 10% of the proceeds benefit the group. AZ earned more than $90 through a more nontraditional fundraiser that is growing in popularity among student groups at IU.

Kruer hopes to continue this sort of fundraiser to other restaurants in town. Chains like Noodles Inc. and Qdoba often donate a portion of their proceeds to help student groups and to attract more costumers.

Outside of restaurants, Comerford also credits the success of product fundraisers.

“Fundraisers that have not been successful seem to be those that lack a tangible product. We always seem to do better when we are able to distribute actual products,” Comerford said.

The basketball sweatshirt fundraiser was open to anyone via a group on Facebook. On the event, members could post their designs to be voted on by group members. The winner would receive a free sweatshirt with their design.

Clarinet UGS Jayme Kasting submitted this winning design for the BRBB sweatshirts via the BRBB Sweatshirt Design Contest!!! facebook group. The design won with 78.5 percent of the vote.

Kruer, however, notes that their “biggest failure to date” was selling Sudler glasses.

“The company went on strike and then out of business,” Kruer said.

Kruer now looks to the new and the old fundraisers of this year to support the chapter. These include Mom and Dad Hundred sweatshirts, Hundred stickers, restaurant fundraisers, BRBB sweatshirts and CD/DVD sales.

“The current economic situation has heightened the importance of fundraising for our chapter,” Comerford said. “Specifically, our chapter was

experiencing economic conflict even before the recession hit, and now it is imperative for us to have successful fundraisers."

“We are always searching, welcoming and open to new fundraising ideas, especially given the current situation. What makes fundraising difficult is product differentiation. In what ways can we offer a better, unique or rare product to our customers that will create a competitive advantage for our chapter.”

The times, they are a-changin'

For former Vice President Jessi Reddick and the 2008-2009 brothers of Alpha Zeta, “good enough” was no longer good enough. That was why beginning with the EA class Reddick and the brothers revamped the Prospective Member Process to take not just one semester, but instead one full school year.

For years, AZ had used the same PM Process to recruit, meet and initiate new brothers into the chapter. Announcements would be the Marching Hundred and the All Campus Band and interested students would attend one or two meet and greet events. Before the semester came to an end a new class of brothers was welcomed into the chapter. The problem, Reddick says, was that it all moved too quickly.

“We always had large class in the fall, but a lot of the time we didn't know them that well to start,” she says. “Most of the time that turned out fine, but on occasion we misjudged a person or the level of their interest.”

This resulted in a number of issues: PMs would drop out in the middle of the process and on occasion other PMs who became brothers quickly lost interest in the chapter, or were not well educated in the history and tradition of KKPsi.

“When a PM class learns and does everything in a month or less, it's hard for them to really engage with what they learn during the process.” Reddick says, “If they don't engage with it, and they don't understand how multiple years in the fraternity can be both useful to the bands and useful to them personally, they will be gone as soon as their initial "new brother" enthusiasm fades. If you don't know why something is important or useful, you won't retain it, and eventually you won't care.”

Another reason that new initiates lost interest was that new Brothers did not feel as though they had enough time to bond with their dads and their bigs or form other relationships within the chapter.

With double the time to educate her new members, Reddick worked to make sure that the class of EA understood KKPsi history and traditions while also encouraging the initiates to apply the teachings of the fraternity to daily life.

“You should join because you love band,” Reddick says. “However, once you're in, there is nothing wrong with contributing things to the chapter in your unique set of skills that can also end up on your resume and portfolio. If our brothers can apply themselves to Psi in a way that benefits their life after college, they will stay committed. Event planning, teaching and journalism/constructing newsletters etc. help the chapter, and help its members.”

Once the class of EA was welcomed into the Brotherhood, its members showed signs of being better educated on the ideas and values of KKPsi than previous classes and of being more comfortable with older brothers.

Though the process has been successful thus far, there are a few issues to work out. “I'm not confident in our extended fall recruitment yet,” Reddick says. “I think we can do a better job with timing of events, the kind of events we choose, and our overall enthusiasm.”

During the Fall 2009 semester, the PM class Eβ became the second class to begin the extended PM Process. Six new PMs were invited to pledge as members of the chapter on Dec. 4^th, 2009. Throughout the course of the school year, the PMs will be educated by the new AZ VP, Dylan Suehiro. The new recruits have all shown dedication to KKPsi by attending numerous events and getting to know current Brothers.

While only time will tell whether the new process will be successful, the first class to go through the process seemed more educated, more acclimated with the Brothers, and more enthusiastic about being brothers in AZ.

I've been holding off putting any new posts up until we've made better contact with all of you which is why there hasn't been anything new since spring. The communications committee is hard at work writing some new articles that will be up by the end of the semester. Every semester the brothers of AZ say good-bye to some of our dearest companions. This spring was no different as 10 brothers received their graduating paddles. Included in the bunch were past executive officers, ritual coordinators, banquet chairs, an National Intercollegiate Band member, a constant cookie-baker and all around outstanding people who have dedicated so much of their time and talents to the chapter.

Whether they see more school in their future, new careers, or are still figuring it out, we at AZ would like to wish them all the luck in the world. No matter where destiny may find them in their lives, they will always be brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi.

Welcoming in a new alphabet with the class of Epsilon Alpha

No more “Delta” classes for AZ as we usher a new era with the class of Epsilon Alpha. Not only are they the first “Epsilon” class, but were the first class to go through a year long membership education process under their guiding spirit, Jessi Reddick ΔΦ.

Feeding a starving cat may not seem to have much to do with leadership, service and musicianship but these new initiates took a creative route in learning and growing in the principles of the fraternity. We in AZ look forward to seeing what they come up with next.

After years of revving up crowds, it's recording time for the BRBB

Promoting the existence and welfare of the college and university bands and cultivating at large a wholesome respect for its activities and achievements are the foremost purposes of Kappa Kappa Psi. AZ follows these to encourage the success of each of IU’s band programs. We perform service projects ranging from water bottle cleaning for the Marching Hundred to organization projects of the department of bands. On April 5th we were able to apply this dedication to our latest service project, Big Red Basketball Band (BRBB) recording set-up.

We had the responsibility of setting up for the 2009 basketball band recording. At almost 100 members strong, this was the band’s first recording; laying down favorite stand tunes unique to Indiana Basketball. Equipment such as stands, chairs and amps all had to be in place in time to record.

When hundreds of people are clustered in one place, it is easy to become confused, frustrated or lost. However, AZ was there to make this event quick and efficient. It took many brothers to set up the entire ensemble correctly.

David Woodley, Director of Athletic Bands/Associate Director of Bands at IU, commented on how fast the brothers worked. If the members of the band had done the set-up instead of the brothers, he estimated it would have taken twice as long. He said how grateful he was to have Kappa Kappa Psi there to set the tone for a smooth and efficient recording session.

Tiffany Galus, AZ’s service coordinator, corresponded with Woodley and Paul Popiel, our chapter sponsor and Assistant Director of Bands at IU, to find out in what the band program needed our help. As soon as she heard back, she suggested this idea which was met with enthusiasm from the chapter.

Setting up for the recording is only one example of how service in the chapter has begun to expand into new frontiers in recent years. Other projects that have been attempted more recently include moving and reorganizing all of the materials in Hundred Hall in 2007 and tightening stands for the concert band rehearsals. We look to make our presence in serving the bands stronger in different creative ways in the future.

As of now we don’t have any further information on obtaining a copy of the recording but will get that out on our online sources as soon as we know!

LEADERSHIP

The 2009 Kappa Kappa Psi North Central District (NCD) Leadership Conference hosted by the brothers of Beta Rho was held at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday Jan. 24, 2009. Two brothers from the Delta Psi class of AZ, Francesca Cardillo and Sara Emery, travelled mid-afternoon Friday the 23rd, socialized with Beta Rho Friday evening and attended the conference Saturday morning after staying with three brothers the night before.

The featured speaker of the day was Tanya Marsh, Governor of the Western District, whose morning session focused predominantly around principles of leadership rather than specific qualities or binding lists to which a leader must adhere. The three principles she asserted were that leaders must have a shared vision, be able to articulate their values, and above all, have the ability to empower others.

The four afternoon sessions were split between the two AZs. Cardillo attended one on the aspects of leadership pronounce in the stations of the third-degree ritual and another on delegating and preparing future leaders. Emery attended one on overcoming the hurdles of member apathy and another on a page-long section of third-degree ritual that was separate from the other afternoon session.

The day ended with a presentation on the NCD Convention by Beta Rho and several announcements regarding intentions to run for district offices, potential bids for the 2010 Kappa Kappa Psi National Convention and information about the 2009 National Convention being held in Phoenix in July by National President Malinda Matney. The fraternity hymn closed the Conference and all brothers departed for home endowed with new ideas and leadership skills to help strengthen their chapters in both present and future endeavors.

BLOCK

On Feb. 21, 2009 several members of AZ drove nearly five hours to participate in one of three district block events held at The Ohio State University. Eta (KKPsi) and Chi (TBS) hosted the block. While there, we received a tour of their phenomenal band facilities. (We’re jealous!)

The Block consisted of five workshops. During the first two workshop sessions, one could choose from “Music in the Ritual,” “Committees and “Documentation.” After several AZs desperately sought coffee at lunchtime, we returned for the last two sessions of the day. These sessions were “Why I Won’t Join” and “Diversity in Service.”

District Governor Christine Beason ran the “Music in the Ritual” workshop, which was a workshop designed to expand the library of music chapters use during the ritual. While pieces like Eric Whitacre’s October were on the list, it was felt by some of the brothers that we might want to expand the repertoire we use.

Some brothers also chose to attend the “Committee” workshop that morning, District President Lizzy Thornton and District Vice President for Programs, Greg Smith, ran it. This workshop focused on the effective use of committes within the chapter and we have been focusing on implementing some of those ideas. Our use of committees is expanding and we are able to accomplish a lot more through them.

District Secretary Treasurer Zeb Watkins and Vice President for Programs Mark Renaud led the “Documentation” workshop. We learned all about keeping appropriate records - which basically means keeping a lot of records. Among the specifics discussed was how to document things digitally such as through the use of spreadsheets on Microsoft Excel and keeping written accounts of service projects, banquets, and brotherhood events for easy set-up in the future.

In the afternoon, district governor, Rod Whiteman ran the “Why I Won’t Join” workshop. He focused his lecture on keeping members active in the fraternity and preventing apathy.

Watkins and Smith ran the “Diversity in Service” workshop focusing on ways for the chapters to expand the type of service in which they engage.

CONVENTION

AZ had a great turnout for the NCD convention in Toledo, Ohio. Thirteen active brothers and a handful of prospective members were able to join in on this event and had an amAZing weekend!

AZ new initiate Sarah Weaver EA, said that while at convention she learned where our chapter fits in within the NCD and that the trip was a fun experience with the brothers in the chapter that were able to go and she enjoyed getting to know them.

We took in meetings over big brothers/dads, the ritual, keeping historical records and more. For many this was a first-time experience and came back talking about next year’s convention and the possibility of IU hosting it in the future.

Laura Clemenson ΔΥ attended a workshop on leadership and said it was helpful in looking at the chapter in multiple ways.

“The most interesting workshop at convention for me was one about finding your place in Psi. The first thing we did was arrange ourselves around the room in a line, with the PMs and NIs at the beginning and then going all the way down to seniors and above,” Clemenson said. After they had completed that activity, they broke into groups based on majors. “Then we each discussed in a group what our expertise could bring to Psi. This was very refreshing to me because it gave everyone the reality that you don’t have to be a music major to give something back to the fraternity.”

This is true for many chapter with most brothers in AZ not in the music field. We are there because we love music and what to be there to help the bands because it is a strong passion in everyone’s heart.

Clemenson said “[Convention] let me know how my love for history and archaeology could fit into a music organization such as Kappa Kappa Psi. It was the highlight of my convention experience.”

Another exciting experience that Megan Miller along with Cassey Crowell and Jayme Kasting had was attendance at a workshop on the ritual. They got to see a new and deeper meaning to each degree and where each part originated from. This was eye-opening to them because more information was given as to how the entirety of the three rituals originated. It’s exciting and interesting to see how far we, as Kappa Kappa Psi, have come concerning the details of ritual.

This was a bonding experience for so many of us and we enjoyed the brotherly atmosphere of meetings, dinners and games the last night. Those that went were able to bring back to the chapter some great ideas about membership education and newfound meanings and focus on ritual. This has been a growing year for AZ and it was great to see our numbers grow not only within the chapter but also in those attending convention and other district events.

The new executive council

A lot has changed with AZ over the past few years, including a boom in younger members and a fresh-faced exec. Here is an update on the state of the chapter directly from the officers.

PRESIDENT

Cassey Crowel, ΔΧ: I had two main goals when accepting the position of president of AZ. Primarily, I wanted to encourage brothers to think back to the five purposes of the fraternity when casting any vote or bringing any discussion involving the chapter. My second goal was to lead without overpowering our young executive council. I had the benefit of entering my office along with essentially an entirely new council. With so many fresh ideas and individuals willing to work towards reaching the highest potential of their office, I have been working to allow every leader in the chapter to contribute their skills. Posting the five purposes of the fraternity on the projection screen during any discussion has proven to be very effective in promoting those purposes in each decision we make. The chapter has hit a growth spurt which I believe will continue for many semesters to come. I appreciate the work of every brother of Alpha Zeta, especially my current executive council. It is due to their hard work and undying support of the fraternity that I am able to successfully and smoothly hold my position.

VICE PRESIDENT

Jessi Reddick, ΔΦ: As VP, I am the guiding spirit to Epsilon Alpha - our first class inducted over the course of a year rather than a semester. My primary focus has been to shift the emphasis of our Prospective Member Education Process to holistic and interactive learning. The PM class still learns their purposes, ideals, and facts but they also learn and discuss why these things matter and how they can be applied outside of the fraternity. We also focus on practicing and developing leadership skills through the organization. A leader in Psi not only gives back to the bands, they also practice shills like public speaking, event organization etc. that will benefit them in their future careers. Oh, and we also still have fun. In anchoring the PM process to “real life,” I hope to see EA and future classes turn out as enthusiastic, dedicated, yet realistic and balanced brothers.

SECRETARY

Sarah Emery, ΔΨ: Hi! I am AZ’s new secretary! I’m extremely excited to be in this position. Last year the past secretary made tremendous improvements on the production of The Offbeat, a chapter publication that goes out to entertain the Marching Hundred on its annual away trip. As a result, I plan on following in her footsteps. I am focusing on enhancing AZ’s communication with other chapters in the district. I’ll send out letters to congradulate them on new classes, members whom have been elected to district offices and to invite brothers to our own exciting events!

TREASURER

Ryan B. Comerford, ΔΨ: Being that we have had some rough financial times both in our chapter and in our economy as a whole, I wanted to make sure we stayed as financially stable as possible when I took office earlier this semester. I have had smaller goals such as strong fundraising, increasing district involvement and pursuing electronic methods for storing historical records on finances. These goals all support the overarching goal of financial stability and bring strength to our chapter. While most of these goals are still in progress, I am very pleased with the success of our chapter this semester, both on a financial and brotherhood level.

SERGEANT AT ARMS

Caitlyn Kruer, ΔΨ: This semester has been very busy as my main goal has been to get this chapter back on its feet! We have had a few hard years fiscally, due to poor organization of fundraisers and money earned. It is time that we better ourselves by improving our bank account in order to better serve the bands on campus! I started with sorting out CDs and DVDs for Marching Hundred and BOY! That has been a process! After a few other successful fundraisers, such as selling basketball sweatshirts and KKPsi beanies for our brothers at convention, we are on our way once again. I am very excited to see where this chapter is going and what the chapter is capable of doing in the next few years!

HISTORIAN

Francesca Cardillo, ΔΨ: My hopes for this office are to promote the newly generated Continuing Membership Education Plan through weekly presentations and to establish a basis for the collection and archiving of photographs for Alpha Zeta’s visual history. Additionally, I plan to create evaluation forms to document events, fundraisers, and service projects for future clarity in attempting to learn from and duplicate past endeavors. In recent events, the actives and potential members have aided in these projects through the creation of a chapter scrapbook.

ALUMNI SECRETARY

Juliana Musmanno, ΔΤ: My goal as Alumni Secretary is to make it an active and effective office again. I’ve been reestablishing connections with the IU Alumni Association. By coding our members with them we will have updated and accurate information at our disposal at all times. I also want to bring back the annual publication of the Alpha Zetan newsletter and eventually get more content posted with an Alpha Zetan online. Within the chapter I am working on creating a concrete standard for receiving paddles based on graduating from the chapter rather than strictly lining up with graduation from the university.

MEMBER AT LARGE

Ryan Rottman, ΔΨ: My main goals for this semester were to keep the brotherhood and morale of the chapter as high as possible. This included bringing back KKChinos, movies nights and picnics. This semester was very busy for most brothers; therefore, not as many brotherhood activities were implemented as I would have enjoyed. In the fall, it is my goal to have more PM activities including brothers. Starting in the summer I will be overlooking the bylaws and making them more presentable and straight-to-the-point. I hope to bring the fraternity together and can’t wait to see where this chapter goes in the future!

SERVICE COORDINATOR

Tiffany Galus, ΔΩ: Spring semester in Bloomington is always very busy, but my goal for the semester was to bring in more ideas apart from the standard collection of spring service projects. I looked for things in the music school that needed upkeep, such as tightening stands in rehearsal rooms, and kept in close contact with the department of bands for any opportunities to assist them. The brothers helped set-up equipment for a BRBB recording session and also loaded vehicles to transport the equipment to and from Assembly Hall and Hundred Hall. The brothers have been very active in all of the service projects and I am very excited to initiate new ideas for the fall!
